So, my daily writing habit lasted, what, two days? As my meditation teachers have reminded me, it’s not how many times you fall down, it’s how many times you get back up. So here’s to getting back up.
One of the things I’ve been really longing for is time and space to write and to read for writing. Home is … complicated, because my sweetie and I both WFH, which means we’re both home nearly 24/7. We joked this weekend that we’re the living embodiment of an O. Henry story, because she’s an extrovert who needs significant people time, and I’m an introvert who needs significant solitude. We were managing not to have either.
She went out for coffee Sunday morning with a friend, and I spent some time doing research on sailing and the Pacific, mostly because I’m kind of obsessed and have been for the better part of a decade now. In the course of that research, I discovered that the big downtown library is a block away from where I park to get my allergy shots, something I do basically once a week. So I put a bunch of books on hold and now here I am, sitting in the science library at a quiet study table, three lovely books to hand and more destined to arrive.
There’s a coffee shop down the street from our house, maybe a block away, and while it’s not a great coffee shop (unfortunately) it’s probably a perfectly fine place to plonk myself down with my computer, a book, and some index cards. And I can plan to come to the library whenever I need an allergy shot. Hell, maybe it will motivate me to get more than one shot a week so I can get to maintenance faster.
And we’ll see what it leads to, all of this writing and reading. Maybe something.
